Tagsa Uibhist is delighted to announce the return of Biadh Blasta Uibhist, our meals on wheels project, delivering nearly 1,000 nutritious, ready-made meals to vulnerable households across the islands this spring.
Running from late April through mid-May 2026, the project will provide 992 frozen meals to individuals receiving care and support from Tagsa and through the Uist and Barra Food Bank. Meals include Roast Lamb, Mince and Tatties, Fish Pie, and Macaroni and Cheese, all prepared and blast-frozen by our long-standing partners at MacLean’s Bakery.
This year’s project is funded by the Islands Cost Crisis Emergency Fund (ICCEF), a Scottish Government initiative administered through Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.
Biadh Blasta Uibhist launched in November 2023 as a pilot, initially serving 23 Tagsa clients over eight weeks. The project was created in response to the unique challenges facing island households: food costs in Uist being higher than on the mainland, public transport is limited, and many residents, particularly unpaid carers and older adults — struggle to access or prepare fresh, nutritious meals.
With heating bills rising and the cost-of-living crisis continuing to bite, direct meal provision offers real relief. Ready-made meals save time and money for carers, reduce food insecurity, and help people maintain their health and independence at home.
Chris MacLullich, CEO of Tagsa Uibhist, said:
In Uist families and individuals face higher food and fuel costs, limited public transport, and the everyday challenges of caring for loved ones at home. Biadh Blasta Uibhist is a practical response to this – nutritious, home-style meals delivered directly to people’s homes, reducing both the financial burden and the time pressure on families and carers. This project shows what’s possible when local organisations work together to support our most vulnerable neighbours’.
In earlier years, Tagsa grew vegetables locally and sourced lamb, venison, and salmon from Uist producers. While this supported the local economy, the costs proved high. To maximise the number of people we can reach, we’ve streamlined the mode, purchasing meals directly from MacLean’s Bakery and delivering them using Tagsa’s emission-free electric vehicles through our Community Transport service.
We’re proud to continue this vital partnership with MacLean’s Bakery and the Uist and Barra Food Bank, bringing warmth and nourishment to those who need it most.
Mòran taing to everyone who makes this possible!
